About Christchurch

Christchurch (Māori: Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the country's second-largest urban area. It is midway down the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula which itself, since 2006, lies within the formal limits of Christchurch.

The city was named by the Canterbury Association, which settled the surrounding province of Canterbury. The name of Christchurch was agreed on at the first meeting of the association on 27 March 1848. It was suggested by John Robert Godley, who had attended Christ Church, Oxford. Some early writers called the town Christ Church, but it was recorded as Christchurch in the minutes of the management committee of the association.

The river which flows through the centre of the city (its banks now largely forming an urban park) was named Avon at the request of the pioneering Deans brothers to commemorate the Scottish Avon, which rises in the Ayrshire hills near what was their grandfathers' farm and flows into the Clyde.

The usual Māori name for Christchurch is Ōtautahi ("the place of Tautahi"). This was originally the name of a specific site by the Avon River near present-day Kilmore Street and the Christchurch Central Fire Station. The site was a seasonal dwelling of Ngāi Tahu chief Te Potiki Tautahi, whose main home was Port Levy on Banks Peninsula. The Ōtautahi name was adopted in the 1930s. Prior to that the Ngāi Tahu generally referred to the Christchurch area as Karaitiana, a transliteration of the English name.

HI Andrew

Thanks for letting me know about the Oz white paper. Its good. Fairly direct.

A cost cutting mentality that downgrades capability doesn't seem smart to me either. I did like the approach that said that 'a fighter squadron is too expensive to maintain properly so we're not going to have one'. I can't see the case for having third rate capabilities but I can see a valid case for reducing the number of capabilities (which has different risks).

So, yeah, a review that focused on reasonable resources capabilities to meet defence needs rather than saving a few bob in the short term would be useful.

It was interesting that the region 5 conference did not agree with a motion that said (imprecisely, I don't remember the exact wording) that armed forces should be more peace keeping in orientation. There were maybe 80 delegates so a good cross-section of people.

The front page of today's Star is headed "SAVE adult education - contact these MPs". The article attacks the National Government over its cuts to adult education and encourages readers to write letters to the editor to The Star as well as contact National MPs.

Please consider sending a letter in now.

Letters can be sent to reporters@starcanterbury.co.nz

You can find more information here: http://www.stopnightclasscuts.org.nz

If you have never written a letter to the editor before, now is the time! There are many angles to this one - National isn't interested in helping ordinary people succeed, National is funding private education $35 million more but cutting adult education, this is a typical National Government, cutting education funding while looking after their rich mates, adult education is needed more than every in this time or recession. etc etc.

Cheers,
Tony

Darel, I just saw your comment on 22 April about selling Defence assets. (Not sure this is just a Christchurch issue!)

Couldn't agree more, selling long term defence assets seems crazy.

It's also disturbing that this kind of short term cost cutting measure was the only trial balloon floated at the announcement of the Defence White Paper process which is supposed to be a strategic review.

The Australian Defence White Paper was released at the weekend and reflects a view that the strategic situation in the Pacific is changing with a Chinese challenge to US supremacy over the next 20 to 30 years. The White Paper makes a committment to greatly increased defence spending as a fraction of GDP as well as increased naval and air force capabilities.

Now this sort of thing will not be right for New Zealand but the White Paper process should involve some public consideration of long term trends in our strategic environment and the right military capabilities to respond to that, not this sort of small bore ideological garbage.

The proposal to sell defence land and lease it back has the potnetial to decrease morale even further in the forces. Soldiers hate being told by civilian contractors what they can and can't do. There's enough of that already going on.

The sale of assets and a lease back arrangement might make sense for assets you don't have a generational commitment to, say an office building. But are we really saying we should alienate our (the military's) ownership rights over the Tekapo and Waiouru training areas? Nah.

Does anyone else care?

Hi all,

Still exploring this web site - excellent I must say. Just to let you know and Coral will be pleased about this. On tonight's conference call, we moved that the next Regional Conference is being held in Greymouth for 30 and 31 May. Put it in your diaries for a great knees up and fishing on the Coast!
