Do you want to do something about your carbon footprint? Wondering what will happen when we run out of peak oil? Climate change issues in the news making you think “what can I do?”? Then come along to the next Red Earth meeting January 28th 7pm at Sydenham Community Centre (25 Hutcheson Street, Sydenham, Christchurch), Dr. Steve Earnshaw from Transition Towns in Timaru will be our guest speaker for the evening.
Transition Towns is not just an idea but is also a way of life and way to make townships self sufficient. The idea has quickly spread around the world, with many towns such as little old Timaru getting involved in the movement. It is where a group of people come together to work out how their community can over come the need for oil and oil related products, all the while creating a healthier, cleaner community and reducing carbon emissions.
“The Transition Town Initiative is a community working together to answer the big question:
For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive; how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of peak oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of climate change)?” [Quoted from transition towns website]
So let all your mates know and head on down to the next meeting of Red Earth and see what you can do to make the difference. While our useless National Government does nothing about climate change, we can make a change ourselves and if enough of us make the small changed Dr. Earnshaw will mention at our meeting then the Government will have to listen. Through our OWN actions we CAN make the difference!
Look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on 28th January 2010 at 7pm, at the same place Sydenham Community Centre 25 Hutcheson Street, Sydenham Christchurch!
