how come the Labour Day event next Monday at Bolton St cemetery is not on here? or Red Alert? I think it's a brilliant initiative and ought to become an annual event. How about inviting our union affiliates? Not even all the NZLP activists in the region know about it and I'm sure there'd be great interest in it.

Dear Mr Mallard,

I understand you handle the education portfolio for Labour. I am an education student at the University of Canterbury. I have recently been given information as to a fees increase at the University. The administration fee (which covers health, disabilities, Maori and P.I. and student support) is said to be increasing from $85 to the tune of $600! This will increase the cost of a three year degree by $1,800!

The reason fore this cost increase is due to the current Government not increasing the SAC in line with the CPI. It is supposed to increase by 3.19% p/a.

I believe this to be user pays legislation by stealth and the University are handing this cost on to students.

I believe this to be a huge issue for students at Canterbury and could be a great way for Labour to galvanise student support. I would also imagine that once this issue hits the newspapers it will cause a real fuss.

This will become public knowledge next week. I found out through being selected for a focus group by the UCSA. I hope you can do something useful with this.

ps I am a Labour Party memeber and a memebr of the NZEI.

Thank you.
